Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff

There’s no denying that French house is back with a vengeance, with everyone putting their own spin on that unmistakable filtered disco sound. But of everyone in the new French house scene, the most interesting is by far Nîmes madman The Phantom’s Revenge.

His sound finds a perfect balance balance between glitchy monsters and filtered grooves. Imagine if Paul Johnson, Justice and Siriusmo cracked open the Absinthe and opened up Garageband, and you have a rough idea.

Exhibit A: 2008’s “Absolute Ego Riot”. This is one of TPR’s craziest tunes. A Candi Staton sample gets the fuck bombed out of it almost beyond the point of recognition, but the track still finds time for the odd looped groove amidst the glitchy chaos and tinny Ed Banger hi-hats.

Or, if this ain’t your thing, the Louis La Roche remix should please you 🙂

Exhibit B: “Saturated Phat Impact”. Phantom gave this out as part of a free 6-track EP over MySpace. A lot less crazy than “Absolute Ego Riot”, but that’s not to say it’s a tune to relax to! A fantastic soul loop sits atop TPR’s trademark heavy drum beats. The original is a great track in its own right, but personally, I think this edit by Treasure Fingers has a little more punch.

Exhibit C: The outstanding “When Mr Hyde Killed Dr Jekyll”. This one moves away from the disco sound, instead taking a halloween organ sample and reworking it into a stuttering electro banger.

And finally, my all time favourite Phantom’s Revenge track, his amazing remix of Fenech Soler’s already brilliant “Lies”.

Till next month,

AY! x

(P.S. Apologies for the lack of post last week!)
